Woodblock
25" x 18"
This image offers you a glimpse into the process of creating a woodcut. To make a woodcut I cut the white areas of an image out of a piece of wood, in this case a sheet of Baltic birch plywood. I paint the wood black so that I can see the lines as I cut. When I am satisfied with the image, ink will be rolled over the surface of the block. The ink builds up on the parts of the block that haven't been cut. Then a sheet of paper is pressed to the inked wood, which transfers the image to the paper. The process is repeated, and multiple impressions are created. The final product will be a mirror image of the block, so in essence I must draw everything backwards.
This image is part of a series of prints upon which I am working that will tell a story within the tradition of the satirical travelogue. Think Gulliver's travels and Candide. I don't plan on writing any accompanying text, so the viewers will have to fill in the blanks between the images.
